Hi, I’m Joel Glover. I started Better Homes in 2007. I came up with the idea to start Better Homes, a construction company focused on small to medium sized projects, because I wanted to help home owners get a fair price for their construction project needs.
When I was building my own home, I experienced what it was like to have contractors bid on certain projects. (I did a lot of the work myself, but did hire sub-contractors for the roof, siding, most of the framing, some of the plumbing and the basement floors.) I had some of them come in with bids that were crazy high and some that were a little too low. It was frustrating, to say the least. I paid an up-front fee of $1,200 to one “so-called” siding sub-contractor and he never panned out. I had to take that as a loss and hire another siding sub-contractor. I quickly learned how difficult it is dealing with sub-contractors and how careful you have to be in deciding which one to hire.
Hiring a contractor is tricky. You want to make sure you don’t overpay for a job, but you also want to make sure you are hiring someone that is going to get the job done with excellent workmanship. There are a lot of contractors out there that will be more than happy to rip you off and there are ones that will underbid jobs so they can get work. You have to be careful of both, which is why I started Better Homes.
I want to make sure that home owners get quality workmanship at a fair price. If it’s a job that’s too big for Better Homes, then we will help the home owner (if they want us to) find a reputable, honest contractor.
I care about people and I care about doing a good job. I believe that contractors can make a great living at what they do and bid jobs at a fair price. There is no reason to take advantage of someone. There’s plenty of money to be made doing construction the right way.
